Reasons To Visit the Greek Island of Alonnisos Based on Events
The green island of Alonnisos is little known, but hosts well-known events. Every year people come to participate in these events:
In 2005, the first running and walking Alonnisos Challenge counted with over fifty athletes from Greece and Europe. It is organised every year and the program includes three races with running distances of 30km, 10km and 2km. and a 15km route for walkers.
Alonnisos is known for being the first Greek island to ban plastic bags thanks to the iniciative Plastic bag-free Alonissos. Every year volunteers clean beaches only accessible by boat thanks to the support of Mom, Thalassa Foundation, SOS Meditteranean and Alonnisos Municipality.
The Greek island of Alonnisos is one of the islands of the Sporades archipelago that welcomes every year the Northern Sporades Sailing Race, which is organised by the Offshore Sailing Club of Volos (IOVATH). Dozens of sailing boats and clubs participate in the two days of competition from Skopelos to Alonnisos and back to Skopelos.
Every year a big celebration takes place in the old town of the island on 15th August. According to the tradition of the island, people celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary with goat meat dish, sweets, and wine. On this day takes place the ceremony of the traditional wedding in Alonnisos.
The Cultural Association of Alonissos in collaboration with the municipality of Alonnisos organises the Festival of Traditional Dances every year. The event attracts people from all over Greece and the inhabitants and visitors on the island have the opportunity to see the traditional Greek dances performed by members of cultural associations from Alonnisos and other parts of the country.
Summer Courses on Homeopathy
Hundreds of doctors, homeopaths, students of homeopathy and others from all over the world visit Alonnisos in order to partcipate in the International Academy of Classical Homeopathy weekly courses tought by the internationally recognised homeopath George Vithoulkas from May to September. The courses are in english or greek, but interpretation services for other languages are available upon request.
